Gold Acid Test vs XRF: How Purity Is Tested When You Sell Gold

Before paying you for your gold, a buyer must confirm the exact purity of your piece. There are two main methods: the acid test (traditional) and XRF machine testing (modern standard). Understanding both helps you know what to expect and ensures you are not underpaid.

Attica Gold uses XRF testing at all branches – the most accurate method available.

What Is the Gold Acid Test?

The acid test uses nitric acid to check gold purity. A small scratch is made on a touchstone, the metal is rubbed on it, and acid is applied. The colour reaction indicates the approximate karat: 24K resists, lower karats show reactions. The acid test is a rough guide – it can indicate purity within a range (e.g., 18K–22K) but cannot pinpoint exactly 91.6% vs 88% purity. It can also slightly damage the surface of your jewellery.

What Is XRF Testing?

XRF (X-ray fluorescence) is the modern gold testing standard. The piece is placed in the XRF machine, which fires X-rays at the metal. The machine reads the fluorescent signature of each element and gives an exact percentage breakdown: e.g., Gold 91.6%, Silver 4.2%, Copper 4.2%. XRF is non-destructive (no scratching), takes 30–60 seconds, and is accurate to within 0.1%. It is the only method Attica Gold uses.

What to Do If a Buyer Only Uses Acid Testing

·       Ask why XRF is not being used – reputable buyers use XRF

·       Acid tests can understate purity – you may receive less than you deserve

·       Request a second opinion at an XRF-equipped buyer before accepting

·       Attica Gold uses XRF at all 200+ branches – free of charge

Can You Test Gold at Home?

Home testing kits (magnet test, acid kits, electronic testers) exist but are not reliable for determining exact purity for resale. A magnet test only confirms whether something is not gold (magnets attract iron/steel, not gold). Home electronic testers have poor accuracy. For resale purposes, only an XRF test at a reputable buyer gives the definitive purity reading.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the acid test still used to buy gold?

The acid test is declining. Most professional gold buyers now use XRF. Attica Gold uses only XRF testing.

Can acid testing damage my jewellery?

Yes – a small scratch is made on a touchstone. The scratch is minor but present. XRF requires no scratching.

How accurate is the XRF test?

XRF is accurate to ±0.1% purity – it gives the exact elemental composition of your gold piece.

Is XRF testing free at Attica Gold?

Yes. XRF testing is free at all Attica Gold branches. There is no charge to test your gold.

Can XRF detect gold plating?

Yes. XRF can detect a thin gold layer over a base metal – it will show a thin gold reading over copper or silver. This distinguishes solid gold from gold-plated items.

What if I test my gold at home with a kit?

Home kits (acid kits, electronic testers) are not reliable for exact purity. For resale, always use XRF at a professional buyer.

How long does XRF testing take?

30–60 seconds per piece. For multiple pieces, testing is done one at a time and typically takes 5–15 minutes total.
